Speedometer

Dash (note Valentine 1)The car has two speedos (made by VDO), one completely useless analogue one with 25 mph increments and a great digital one. You really cannot glance at the analogue gauge and get a reading. What speed is two thirds of the way between 25 and 50? Come on! Quick now! You see, it's much easier to look at the answer, which is printed in big clear letters just to the right. They both tally perfectly, but the analogue device really is superfluous. I'd like to see it binned in favour of a pair of gauges mirroring the right hand side of the pod. Oil pressure and temperature, maybe?

How I'd like itAlso, there have been some people who have complained about the accuracy of the device. Well what's new? (Inaccurate speedos, not complainers!) Speedos have never been accurate, with 10% over being typical. Good for the manufacturers - their cars appear faster than they are, and "good" for the user - they don't get done for speeding when they're not. Also, an odometer that over-reads (though these tend to be quite accurate) will only show the car returning a better mpg, and will have you in the showroom for a new one sooner... My advice is to stop looking at the instrument and get on with driving! For your information, here's a graph of real/indicated speed as measured by a leading UK magazine using a fifth wheel. MS Excel tells me it's 4% high and pretty linear.
