I realise they are very different cars, the point was just that if BMW thinks there is a market for estate cars with a bit of "go" then it would not be unreasonable to think that it would be possible to market a 5 door Civic Type-R.

Now that is true.
In the Wiki I found:
Type S 1,8 - 1,317 kg (2,903 lbs)
5 door 1,8 - 1,750 kg (3,858 lbs)
I have to say that this was a bigger weight differance than I had thought and that adding approx 400kg to a Type-R obviously would affect both speed and handeling.
Good observation there CivPilot.
The weight issue may well be key to the non-existance of a 5 door Type R.
