It probably could, but it's far from an easy job, and would certainly cost more than the original £800 or so option

I agree, alot of expense and alot of hassle!
On a geeky note, I have noticed on the 1.4s hire car Civic I have at the moment that the main dashboard top part is the same on non sat nav models as sat nav versions.
What I mean is the triangular trim/design piece (which is actually part of the molded top) adjacent to the nav display or radio display is the same on both versions - on non nav versions, the plastic panel covering the top of the radio (behind the vents) cover is flat an level, covering part of the triangle, whereas on the sat nav versions, the radio cover dips down exposing the bottom edge of the triangle

If you get what I mean. So at least you would not have to replace the whole top part of the dash! (Ok virtually everything else!)
