My question is do you have both the Auto button and the a/c button pressed on or is it if the Auto is on, then a/c kicks in and out depending on temp setting and you don't need to have pressed the a/c button.

If you put the system on Auto then the A/C button is on as well.
If you turn off the A/C button the the system goes off Auto.
