Z4

I thought I'd got a good price on a new Z4 when I bought it for £25,800 in March this year, against a list price of almost £29,000.

It had all the 'recommended' options for getting the best resale value, and I took it out on a 3 year PCP that guaranteed a minimum £14,000 after 3 years/36K miles.

This sounded like a great deal, and I could not lose more than £11,600 (after discounting road tax) in 3 years.

Unfortuately, after 5 months, I couldn't cope any longer with the hard ride and the effect if was having on my back, getting in and out.

The best offer I could get for the car cash (at only 5 months old, unmarked, and 6,000 miles) was £19,500, losing £1 for every mile I had driven!

I was offered £21K to 'down-trade' against the SGT, so maybe got about £20K in real terms for the Z4. So the car lost about £6,000 in 5 months, and could have lost no more than another £5,600 in the next 31 months!

This just shows how cars lose loads in the first year. The effect is even more horrific if you compared the trade in value against the £29K list price!

And the Z4 is supposed to hold it's value well! I've also lost loads on 2 other BMW's traded in inside 2 years. My Audi TT did much better though, and previous Honda's have not done too badly. My CRV lost £11K in 40 months and 59,000 miles - not too bad I think.
