Actually I'm not sure about folding down as I haven't tried...!!
The magic seats certainly do fold up though. Problem for me with trying it out is that I have the backs of the seats covered neatly (white dog, you see!
) and if I move the seat backs, there'll be an explosion of dog hair in places I don't want dog hair to be!!
I'll have a peek tomorrow in the daylight but from memory I can't recall that there's anything attaching the guard to the seats themselves, so I suspect you'll be okay.
I'll try and investigate for you!!
