at that sort of speed, I'd be getting about low 40s from mine too...
(I have 27K on mine now)

my day to day, mainly commuting 20miles each way, motorway and back roads gives me 43mpg tank after tank.

It is possible to drastically increase the mpg by simply driving more slowly (hence my comment to Rob), but it's not really practical in 'real life' (for me) to drive like that all the time
