I have used "Fablon" Sticky back plastic sheet to protect the foglights.

It is a reasonably thick clear film which looks strong enough to protect from stone impacts. Even if it doesn't work it will hold the glass in place if it breaks.

It is virtually invisible when installed , has been on for over a 1000 miles and shows no sign of peeling off.

I bought a roll at B&Q for @ £4. There is probably enough on the roll to protect at least 100 cars !
