Anyone familiar with the A627 in Oldham?

This is almost entirely unrelated to Civic owners but it's bugging me anyway...
I've been to Manchester a couple of times now to see some of my friends who are at uni there, and every time I leave my sat nav takes me out the same way - namely driving through a few confusing road systems, along a 40 zone laced with cameras, onto the A627 (i think) and then onto the M62/60/whatever. The thing that's bugging me is that i'm SURE there are NO speed limit signs whatsoever informing us that the A627 has changed from a 40 laced with cameras to a (presumably) national speed limit zone. I'm only presuming it's national speed limit cause when i first drove down it i was trundling along at 40 (yeah I know, driving the speed limit, madness) until it occurred to me that there was a massive open road, no built up surroundings, and people overtaking me at double my speed.

Can anyone please confirm whether it is actually national speed limit (I dont really fancy gettin caught doin 70 in it if it's a 40) and if so whether there are or ever were any signs informing us as such?
