I have DAB now, and am more than happy with the quality - I use it in preference to FM even for stations I can get on FM. Needless to say the quality of Radio 5 and Virgin is way better on DAB than it is on AM, and there is a much, much wider choice of stations. My Blaupunkt Woodstock head unit was worth the money just for 6 Music.
I haven't even got a proper aerial for DAB - my current car (Alfa 156) has the FM aerial in the back window like the Civic, and I was loathed to have an external aerial, so I didn't use DAB for ages after I bought the stereo, but in the end I could bear Radio 1 and local radio no longer. I fitted the cabling for the aerial to the back shelf, where I was supposed to glue it to the window, and then glue the aerial bit on top of it on the outside of the window, but much to my surprise it worked without the aerial bit. I just have a little black box on the rear shelf. This is good enough to give good reception as far north as Fort William, as far West as Scarborough, as far south as I have been and well into Wales.
I'm not so bothered if the units become obsolete in a few years - it would just be nice to be able to change the stereo if Honda insist on not providing a DAB option. I'm not asking for just DAB, the unit I have now has FM and AM too, in fact it can even be set to use FM or DAB depending on signal strength when stations broadcast on both.
I want my next car to be a step forward - the Civic seems better built, more practical and more fuel efficient. It's just a shame the ICE is both worse than I have now an seemingly devilishly complicated to upgrade!
