If you buy the plate from the DVLA then the price includes the £80 assignment fee. If you buy the plate remember it will have to be fitted to a car registered after 1st of March 2008.
If you don't get the right deal then you have a year from the date of issue to apply it to a car. If you don't you can either pay a £25 retention fee. If you don't you lose the plate.
Likewise when you take the plate off the car you have to pay the £80 assignment fee and £25 retention fee and the same applies again
