I was also taught to press button. pull up (til firm). release the release-button. and then pull up a further click or two.

But ANYWAY after reading my advice booklet. I have to admit there was one time where my civic did start rolling away... but that had more to do with me forgetting to put the handbrake on altogether

(at least I think it was... i would be very concerned if it really wasn't just my forgetfulness).
