Sorry I think you have misunderstood me. I didn’t say there was no difference between to two. What I was referring to was the fact that most diesel owners (including yourself) are claiming an average mpg of around mid 40’s which is what I'm getting from my 1.8 petrol. Driving sensibly I can get mid 50’s too and have seen as high as 61 so on an mpg basis there seems little difference and certainly not enough to make me think I wish I had got the diesel instead. As for torque, engine characteristics, residual values, cost of ownership, etc, etc. Well that conversation belongs in a different thread altogether.
