It was a Vauxhall Vectra 2.2 Automatic. Before anyone says, "Hmm, they're not so bad", mine suffered:
Failure of both front axels (before 15,000 miles)
3 radios
2 on-board computers
2 dipping mirrors
1 Oil Radiator (which is inside the water radiator - and caused the gearbox to fail)
1 Gearbox (see above)
1 fuel pump
1 Geabox Control Unit (£750 replacement)
1 Engine Control Unit (>£1,000 replacement)
and a whole load of other bits and pieces including headlight, sidelight and taillight bulbs which blew with monotonous regularity (about every 2 to 3 months)
The above is in addition to all the usual wear and tear you get on a normal high milage car (tyres, break discs, batteries, etc.)
The sad thing is that I owned 8 Vauxhalls before this one and the worst thing that happened to any of them was a blown fuse. Alas, thanks to Vauxhall's attitude regarding the gearbox, I will never buy another General Motors car again.
Just to keep this forum on topic, my Honda has already done 8,500 miles in 6 months and the most serious thing I've had to do to it is wash & polish it and top up the windscreen washer. Oh and take all my friends and collegues out in the "spaceship" and bask in their unbridled envy
