They probably do - not had any problems with tar spots on the lower half of the sides of the car.

I mentioned this in an earlier discussion about the mudflaps - where the wheelarches curves inwards at the bottom, before flaring out on the side skirts, the mudflaps fill in this gap, so do prevent spray up the sides a little. Not going to stop all the spray as it some goes round the sides, but I think it helps a little.

Not sure what they would look like on an R - Might need colour coded ? They blend in quite well with the grey skirts on my S

And they're not a waste of money if you don't pay for them.
