This is just my experience. In 40 years driving I have never had to replace a clutch, maybe 200,000 miles on some cars, that's for normal driving. So that would be my expectation for the Civic.

I would ask the dealer to give you the old clutch plates, to make sure plate wear is the problem and to evaluate the quality if neccessary. Who knows, it could be weak springs, and another Civic issue is dawning.

Clearly, clutch failure at 40,000 km is not normal and if the car has been used sensibly then something is "unfit for purpose".
