It is only light 'rust' (discolouration, I think the WD40 removed most of it , but still it shouldn't happen, if I can get some photo's in the light I'll try, it's not 100% clean at the mo' as I've just done about 150miles in it to my other home and back).

The cotton bud gets in deep down to apply a good layer of wd40 to the back, it is tedious and only done every once in a while.

Edit, have checked and what appeared to be rust is only a light surface rust and has come off easily with WD40, it is nowhere as bad as yours, I have cleaned it once more and applied alloy wheel seal over the area, hopefully this should stop it, does anyone else coat their triangles??
