As far as I can remember, the sweet shop lady, it nearly always was a lady, would put a flavoured solution into a bottle then put it under a large glass globe that held the water, then pressed a button or something and CO2 would be put into the bottle with the water.
You had to drink it in the shop or a 1 penny return deposit was put on it.
......if you were rich (like alt) then you would probably have the 2 penny version which was twice the size.
You could burp for England after one of those!
