By the name alone you can tell what and why they WERE useful, Bull or 'Roo bars are for deflecting large animals away from the from of a vehicle and defending the vehicle, NOT the animal that was struck.
Yes, getting stuck by a car/4x4/whatever, isn't going to be a pretty event but at low impact speeds, the damage done by steel tubing is massively greater than modern day, impact absorbing bumpers/front ends.
Plus, they look as naff as heck anyway lol
