I hope that something will be learned from this. Even if it is just a gentle reminder, rather than more legislation or paper work. Only luck or skill, or more likely a smattering of both, prevented a more serious outcome.
As for the PPRuNe, places like this annoy me up sometimes. In jobs where mistakes can be very public, there always seems to be somebody telling you how they could have done it better, what went wrong (without having any insight or inside knowledge) and coming up with wild rumours.
A friend of mine was killed in a train crash at Cowden back in 1994. He was the guard on one of the trains. There was some very ill informed rumours put about after the crash that he was actually driving the train, although there was absolutely no evidence that he actually was, there was also no way of proving that he wasn't either. This meant that a good, honest man, was vilified in death.
This, coupled with the bulls**t journalism that went along with the story means that now I get very annoyed with most of the coverage of serious incidents.
