Just tried it again and regardless of the position of the hold switch, or the setting for the backlight timer, the iPod switches off 2 minutes after the car is turned off - which is good, but makes me look. 
So it looks like both those settings on the iPod were complete red herrings.

That could answer another query I have.
Until the last firmware update on the ipod (to 1.2.3 I think) I never noticed a problem, however now after a traffic report interrupt it sometimes stutters when the music restarts. Forward winding to the next song and then back to the previous song stops it.
Perhaps to save battery the ipod now goes into a deeper sleep during traffic reports so when the ipod restarts the hard drive has to fire up causing the stuttering.
I thought I was mad thinking the firmware update could muck things up (Apple support aren't aware of the problem), but if the auto powering down of the ipod has changed, then it would make sense. (Even if what I have writen doesn't).
