There is only a i-Vtec light on the Type R, it fully kicks in at 5200 rpm on the Type R.

I've not driven a 1.8 i-Vtec so could not comment about the noise, but I do have a Type R and can confirm that it sounds fantastic when it kicks in, there is also a slight pull back into your seat as you feel it kick in.
