I do get the feeling though that the Civic is a car tuned for performance rather than economy. I've owned 2.2 diesels in the past (I had a new shape 2.2DTI Vectra - god foresaken unreliable wretch of a car) and that was probably better on fuel than the Civic - but had a lot less power too.

The Vectra you had being a 2.2 was Euro 3 and Euro 4 strangles cars more, and also in the past. My experiences with the same car (with the 2.0 DTi unfortunately) is that since all fuel now is City Diesel, economy will be worse as when both City Diesel and normal Diesel were available, I used to get 2-3 mpg less on City (rhyming slang!!) Diesel than the regular stuff.
My experience with the Civic is the economy is fantastic as long as you stay below 2000 rpm (66 mph GPS reading). If only I can resist the turbo power
