My mistake it was more than 6 years ago when i drove the 2.2 VX220,
I do remember the year after buying my MR2 that Vauxhall changed the engine to a turbo engine that was supposed to be a lot better.
The Mazda 5 people carrier would probably be as much fun as the MX5
