I do remember the year after buying my MR2 that Vauxhall changed the engine to a turbo engine that was supposed to be a lot better.
The Mazda 5 people carrier would probably be as much fun as the MX5

The 2.2 is actually the more stripped out racer, the Turbo is faster but softer. Trouble is when the torque comes on the Turbo in it can easily break traction in the wet. Not a nice feeling powering out on a wet roundabout.
As they say though each to their own, I drove the Type R and liked it. It would have been a good compromise if I couldn't have had a lightweight roadster, but if I had to choose a drivers car which suited my style of driving the MX5 would be my choice.
