Depends what you want.
I have a 1.8 Type S but never entertained a Type R as my reasons were to reduce my outgoings.
I disagree regards running costs being similar. In isolation theres not much in it but add all those little things up and over 12 months its a bit. Obviously some things are individual but for me:
MPG - not Miss Daisy - Motorway
Type S (tested)
35-47
Type R (assumed)
23-35
Road Fund Licence
Type S
circa £150
Type R
circa £300!
Insurance
Type S was over £200 cheaper than my Focus ST (similar risk to TypeR)
Servicing about the same.
Controversial - Hot hatch versions of most models depreciate quicker than run of the mill versions.
