I would agree that cheap tyres are a false economy. What I would say though is that higher price doesn't always equate to greater longevity. I used to own a Focus that came with Pirelli P6000 tyres (not cheap) and they wore horrifylingly quickly. Obviously in general terms softer compound=greater grip=quicker wear.
