Now I've been driving 7 years and when my instructor used to turn up they would leave the car in gear and apply the handbrake and when I got in I would shut the door, put my belt on, sort the seat and the mirrors, knock the car out of gear, start the engine.

Now you are taught to make sure that the car is out of gear before you start it and I always do this. Seems that people quickly forget what they are taught and you can't tell me that your instructor never told you to make sure the car was not in gear, start the engine, put the clutch in, select first, mirror, signal, check over your shoulder to your blind spot before you move off, if save to do so move off.
