If its the same little blue light in my car (Found by the light switches for the interior lights on the roof), it is to purely to shine down on the gear knob and make it look good in the dark
its called 'submarine lighting' - So called, as apparently you get it in Submarines!
And the only reason i know that is because my partner has a red light in his Focus ST and i wondered what it was for and he told me!
