LOL, but, yeah, this is a *classic* sales technique too: sell the low ticket item after the high ticket and relative notions of value go out of the window. When I hear lines like "what's £x when you've just spent £y" my warning lights start flashing like mad, telling me I'm someone's trying to pull one on me!

You're right, it's not optimal. But if I was on a really tight budget and it literally came down to buying a budget set of tyres or a set of pre-worn top-brands in decent condition, I know which one I'd take.
Just because they're pre-worn doesn't mean they're in poor condition. I recently sold a set of 4 Dunlops off my old car with 5mm+ tread. The reason: logistics with a second set of alloys and a set of winter tyres I had fitted. It's quite common in countries that use winter tyres regularly to come across pre-worns in very decent conditions - I think Germany supplies this country with a lot of pre-worns for this reason.
I'll also soon be selling 2 Michelins with 5mm tread. The reason: the previous owner didn't rotate the tyres and the fronts are now worn; I don't want to drive a car with mixed front and rear tyres, so I'd rather sell the rears. They're in superb condition, no issues at all with someone else using them!
