All N. Ireland plates are in effect dateless.
For example the orignal plate on my car was MEZ 1127. The 'EZ' denotes Belfast as the place of registration. The 'M' sort of indicates age as they go alphabetically from A and up (e.g. AEZ, BEZ, CEZ...), but continually cycle and quite a few letters are released each year so it won't be long before they are back at 'M' again. The numbers from what I gather are pretty much random.
It used to be you could be lucky and get a short plate when you registered your car but DVLNI caught on that they could make alot of money from reserving these and selling them off
