I prefer to use sidelights when it gets dusk, I think it definitely helps particularly with a black car. Also sidelights allow for your rear lights to come on without needlessly dazzling ppl in front when it is still light.

Each to their own I guess, but I have always found them useful to have as an interim to full dipped beams.
