It's illegal to drive on sidelights alone in the UK. If you consider it dark enough to use your lights, then you must use your main lights - not position lights.

Technically if you were driving through a tunnel etc and your sidelights only came on then you would be breaking the law before your main dipped beam was illuminated (I guess?).

Side/Position lights are for use when you are parked only.

People that use front and rear foglights also break the law if they use them other than in, well, fog!

Snow and rain are not classed as 'fog'. Using them in these conditions causes glare and makes other lights (brake lights and turn signal indicators) very difficult to see, especially on motorways.
