I had a friend was only getting 10 - 11k out of his Golf GT TDI thingy, he eventually stopped fitting the tyres it came with and went to Continental and got nearly 20k. The guy at the tyre place suggested that VW put the original tyres on to enhance the handling of the car and were therefore a slightly softer tyre, hence the better handling but worse wear.
