Note to manufacturers:
Don't be "confident" or "expectant", much less brag that your shiny new thing of loveliness will get a 5-star rating (see Audi Q7, Honda Civic).
Instead, wait until NCAP actually give you a bit of paper with the results on and then count the number of stars carefully. If there are five, then announce to world car is "really, really, really safe". If < 5 then talk about the vehicle's attractive blue dials, sporty aluminium pedals and the fact there's a stealth compartment for expensive things that you don't want nicked, as well as a neat gunk thingymejig for patching up the tyres.
Communique to franchised dealers of rival manufacturers:
It doesn't need me to remind you that, recently, we've been having a hard time flogging our wares because of that new Honda. Well boys and girls, we've finally found the chink in its armour. Wait for it...yes, it only got a four star adult protection rating (chortle, chortle)!
Therefore, as a matter of course, you must mercilessly EXPLOIT this flaw to all potential customers. When asking "what other vehicles have you test driven?" should a customer reply "Honda Civic" then use the following phrase:
"Well, certainly, whilst our product is styled more conservatively than some others, it's extremely safe. Did you know, for example, that Honda's new Civic received only 4 stars in its NCAP test? Ours has five!! Just think, in a bad crash that extra star may be the difference between well....you know. Let's just say, you want little Johnny/Tamara over there to grow up knowing his father/mother don't you?
Seriously though, this is a real lifeline to the likes of Ford, Volkswagen and Vauxhall in respect of their C-segment products competing against the Civic (not to mention a bit of a PR disaster for Honda).
If you look at the reasons why the car failed to acheive 5-stars, then it actually isn't too drastic (certainly I'd be more concerned about faulty spot welding in the Audi Q7)
Going on Honda's track record, however, have they ever achieved a 5-star NCAP rating? They made great play of their state-of-the-art test facility in testing the new Civic, but obviously there's been a failure somewhere. Like RR said, a few more stickers here and there might have done the trick!!
Fair to say now that the Civic is also out of the running for Car of the Year 2007!
