it would be handy if you could see it in the side mirror
the one on my TT was sprung loaded, so when released (electronic button, but same basic idea), it opened to 90 degrees.
easy to spot in the mirror, and it made a nice solid sounding clunk.
cap was made of metal though, not plastic
