It's still just a cooking family hatchback, but compared to other similar cars I have owned it is really very good. The engine in particular is one of the best I've driven. Each of us seems to have a niggle (for me, it's the door that's on a bit wonky - but it will be fixed), but other similar cars I've had have had not one niggle but a list of serious faults.

Niggle aside, I much prefer the drive of the Civ compared to my Audi A4 Quattro V6. And that makes me happy!
I'm afraid that judging a car by what one reads on a forum like this is the very best way of measuring it, Pottsy. And this applies in excelsis when that car is a Honda, because we already know all the great Honda fundamental strengths. It's the niggles, faults and annoyances which are relevant. As I've said before, this is a great car tarnished by certain poor management decisions...the worst of which was launching too early. (The filler cap, for God's sake!) Buying now is a gamble, and it is infuriating and insulting that it should be so. Buying in a year or two should be the pleasure it was always designed to be.
