Fellow Mac owner here. My first advise would be to reinstall OS X and free up some space. Do an advanced install and remove all the stuff you won't use - language specific stuff especially. This should free up around 5gb of space.
For apps try out:
Web browsing - Camino/Firefox
Email - Thunderbird
FTP - Cyberduck
MSN/ICQ/etc - Adium
Make sure you have some fun with iSight too.
