I've never been a fan of the wheelbrushes. Very harsh and spray you in the face with dirt.

Real men use wash mitts:

Use that every week, and dry using a waffle weave towel.
Every 2-3 months I wax my wheels using Poorboys Wheel Sealant.
Every 6-12 months I take the wheels off and clean them properly, removing every last bit of dirt. Then 3 coats of wax.

Although this may be a little extreme for most. :P
