You can't really hold the outside. The bit that comes out in my car (the metal insert) is only about 2mm bigger than the charger itself and that makes it pretty much impossible to hold in place unless your fingers happen to be flat bladed screwdrivers (which I expect is true for some of the posters on this site!
).
Another thing: The power cable is right in the way of the gear stick once you've plugged it in. What idiot thought to put it there knowing it would be primarily used for chargers!
