Sorry if my post sounded a bit brash, the point I was making was that driving in neutral in not recommended, and therefore would not worry myself too much with the didgy readings.
I wouldn't be supprised if the car knew which gear it is in. It knows if a fly lands on the clutch pedal (turns cruise control off) so it could make sense.
On the subject of MPG, mine is so much lower than I was hoping it would be. I am aware the weather is unuasally hot now, so the climate control is working overtime, but I would still have expected >31MPG (mostly town)
