Yep thats the way I started too.

At 17 in a crappy Mk2 Escort that cost £200. The insurance was £300 odd. Had 3 similar bangers and then moved up to 4 year old cars, got a nice healthy NCB. Then lucky enough to have 3 company cars in a row and came out of the scheme just before I would have lost my NCB by not having my own policy for 3+ years.

It really makes you appreciate how hard you worked for you NCB when you are 100% responsible for your actions and not insuring as a named driver.
