OK you'd need to do the sums to see if it was worth it for high milers, but for general smoothness (and I expect engine life) mainline fuel does it
Just to pick up on the engine life thing: diesel engines typically last much longer than petrol ones.

The other benefit the diesel has is for company car users re CO2 emissions.

And presumably the CDTi accelerates a fair bit quicker in most day-to-day circumstances than the VTEC due to the extra big helping of torque.
