If the check system light stays on, I would be very surprised if the ecu had not logged a fault. I would always ask for a printout of the diagnostic log in these circumstances. Even if you don't understand it, it's useful for future reference considering that these intermittant warning lights have a habit of coming back to haunt you.

I think resetting the light fixes nothing, other than putting the light out and clearing the log.
