Yes it's a common fault with plates, nothing to do with the car. I'd seek a replacement from the dealer although they may say no as it's not part of the car and thus not covered by any warranty. Failing that any decent garage should be able to make you up a plate for £8-10 so long as you can prove ownership of the car which I suspect won't be a problem
