I had to phone up my dealer sales guy to ask for the reg number a week before it was due, and got a choice from the reg they were assigned. The dealers get the reg numbers in a block and its up to either the customer or dealer which car gets what reg.
Don't wait for the dealer to get in touch with you, as you might have to take whats left. If I hadn't been on the ball I could have been stuck with a crap reg, some of the ones offered were truly awful.
