My wife bought a 1.6 (SXI) Astra Sportshatch last year - and, to be fair, I think it's a great car and was seriously considering the 1.8 SRI Sportshatch before being drawn to the Civic. Can't speak about the VXR (as haven't driven one) but the Sporthatchs are well made and certainly the 1.6 is very nimble for the size of engine - my wife's car also has been squeak and trouble free (unlike mine). I would say though the that rear visability from the Sportshatch/VXR is a lot worse than the Civics! (though it does have that rear wiper).
