smb09 - your night time photos - take a torch with you and follow these steps: (this is if you have a compact digital with no AF illuminator)

1 turn on your camera, make sure the LCD is used not the viewfinder. turn off the flash
2 shine the torch on what you want to photo
3 compose the picture
4 half press the shutter button (two stage shutter release on most cameras), make sure the auto-focus is locked onto a target
5 turn off the torch
6 fully press the shutter button. Be careful not to move, as camera shake will be a problem.
7 Your image will probably be very dark, you might want to correct it using a photo enhancing program.

There also might be some settings in the manual setup, which allows you to change the sensitivity of the camera.

At least with a digital you can have lots of attempts without it costing anything!
