When I got my first 7th generation Civic it was a new platform/model/engine too.
Only had a recall for the fuel-filler tube and the driverseat was wobbling after a while. But that's it. And this Civic was build in North America (Ohio or Ontario), which has not the same reputation for quality as Japan.
So a new design isn't always flawed with major problems at the beginning. Perhaps my example is just an example, but Honda isn't in the top list of quality and reliability for no reason.
