It seems that the 1.8 Petrol has a sweet spot of about 55MPH in top gear.

Any faster or slower and the MPG drops.

My first month of non-urban driving and no jams has only resulted in 44MPG displayed and 39MPG actual. This is only working out to be 6MPG better than my 6 cylinder IS200 that was considered thirsty. This is also using exactly the same route and conditions.

From this weekend I'm changing from BP Ultimate 97RON to BP normal 95RON to see if it makes much difference.

Let's hope it loosens up in time.
